WHETHER I WEATHER THE WEATHER, Part 2

I can't believe this - I read the Iowa blogs and see the great weather, and we're having a snowstorm again today - well, a Pacific Northwest Snowstorm - above freezing; huge wet flakes; schools called off everywhere - bit no snow on the ground.  I can only laugh.  But it's nice to have another little winter break before Spring is officially here.  Which reminds me, I had great fun preparing the sermon for last Sunday - "Spring Cleaning Came Early This Year".  A lot of humorous comments, and some to the point of "I could feel the whip."  So if you desire some leisure listening ... there it is. After the second service two girls (dressed in their Girl Scout outfits - GS Sunday - 3rd Grade) came up to me kind of sheepishly and asked, "Pastor Dan,did all that really happen?" (referring to the opening story of the sermon).  I said, "Would I ever lie to you???" ... to which one responded "oh, I wish I could have been there to see that" - But then I admitted, it was just a story. By the way, I'm looking for "outside" feedback - does the PowerPoint with the sermon make any positive difference?  As family readers, you're kind of my test cases for critiques; out here I usually get, "Oh, I see you've added pictures to your sermons ..."  Which doesn't tell me much.

Lent is going so quickly this year; we're doing the Wednesday services on the last seven Words: "Words that Last Forever" - the Worship Arts team is at it again!  They're making paper banners for each Word - as you can see the "FORGIVE" needs to be reattached (a problem with paper banners and forced-air heating); and the kids get a BW sticker to color and put in their "Passport" book to remember the theme.  Really clever, I think!

Got lots going on today - will bring this to an end; Council tonight - this year I've been leading the opening/devotional time with our "Vibrant Faith Principles" study - usually takes 30-40 minutes; but a nice way to begin a meeting - the business seems to take a lot less time when more time is given to devotion.  And a great group who participate in the discussions!  Tonight Karina is presenting her Community Garden Results and Study findings to see if the group will be in favor of the effort for Spring 2013.  Her passion for this garden is contagious.

One coat of stain and one coat of Urethane (of the needed three) on the new desktop for our "office" - YES! it's getting closer all the time.  Keep that drum roll bdbdbdbdbdbdbd-ing, Rhoda!

till next time.

we love ya!

  1. I will try again. I replied this morning after we listened to the sermon and poof...it disappeared after I inadvertently touched some key. Grrrr.....

So, where to start. I think the passport idea is super cool. What a great blessing your Worship Arts people are to PoP. I've made a good number of paper banners over the years...and miraculously, I still see one I made for Pentecost hoisted yearly. They were a lot of fun to make.

Re: the sermon. Sometimes we listen and sometimes we listen and I watch. We listened this morning w/o watching until I came to life and realized I should see what 'pictures' were there. We both appreciate the visual aids in our own sanctuary when the Pastors add the PPt to their sermons. I think it helps me stay focused on the message and implications. I will add that w/o the PPt that we enjoyed in the early months of POP sermons, we were not YEARNING to see the PPt. Just the message/your voice and the development of the sermon was satisfying. I even appreciated the more personal 'I'm preaching in my office cuz the taping of last Sunday's sermon did not happen' week. So...does that help? Had we known we were part of the outside focus group, we would have attempted to 'beef up' our comments for your feedback. It does take about 1 minute to load on my machine before the sermon begins.

It's about time to head toward SL for our Lenten supper/rehearsal/worship/rehearsal. Tonight the choir is singing Christ Mighty Savior. We've done it 2 x before and I'd like to 'think' we are getting better....but I'm not sure about that! :) Last Sunday we sang "Go, My Children...." after the benediction. I was so happy how the choir had sung, but then almost shocked to hear the congregation clapping! :)

  2. Hi Judy - thanks for the information. I am a bit surprised at the loading time; at home I get it as a "streaming" video - that is, it starts playing before it's completely loaded; don't know if that's a PC fix or a webmaster mix - will look into it.

isn't it great to be a part of a focus group when nobody tells you! but had you known, the "candid"ity of the responses would have been lost. Hah.

I misspoke (re: Iowa trip) - are you also there in May? It's just June and July when K can't get away from town. So if that is a prospect, please let me know. (Rhoda, please plug into this thread as well ... what's your Apr-May calendar like)?

K and I are hopefully penciling in some dates tonight; will get back to ya soon. Love ya.

  3. OK, you asked, so here's out April/May schedule -- if we had a choice when we could see you, April would fit better. May is just chockful with getting ready for Dustin's graduation on the 20th, plus, trying to get him to 'know for a fact' that May 31st means that he has already transitioned out of our home, not after that date. Also, we have no idea how long our other border is staying with us, so, we would need to see you in Spirit Lake; we have no other bedspace available. Does that help you?

As for the PPt, they're helpful, but, I always just enjoy the voice, too. For me, PPt can become 'busy' (not that yours are, Dan) if there are too many pictures. ie -- powerpoint presentation where there are so many 'bells and whistles' that they become a distraction, rather than helpful. I'm not a good one for an opinion on this; I'm still of the 'old school' of Rev. EJ with the crescendo/decrescendo to keep me alert. I'd be the part of 'an old dog' in the saying of teaching new tricks - ha! Just keep the Word coming at us for as long as you can, Dan -- it's such a joy to worship with you. Thanks.

  4. thanks, Rhoda - for both pieces of information. K & I are having friend Bill (whose wife died on Epiphany after Lin) over for dinner tonight- Corned beef and cabbage and blueberry pie! doesn't get much better than that!
