ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Part 2 interposed with the pics I posted this morning.

Day One: Thursday/Friday 10.6-7.11
got out of Portland at 5:30 or so for the 3+ hour trip;  got there on time; Jackie and Jerry were there - they'ed already eaten; so they watched us eat while visiting - June had Cornish hens.  great meal.

next morning we got out of Roseburg about 10, after delicious homemade breakfast.

Roseburg - apple pancake with June

then headed down I-5 to Grants Pass to get on the Redwood Highway (in Oregon);
follows the Illinois and Smith Rivers to the coast; end up in the Oregon Redwoods;
then into CA to head south ...
Redwood Country - CA coast at Crescent City

the famous (infamous?) US 101;  took this and CA 1 (coastal Highway) for the trip
yup! that's right

always saw signs for wild elk - and sometimes they were REAL close!
even wildlife along the way!

stopped at one 'tourist' attraction - the "Immortal" Tree; this chuck (of another tree) was in the parking lot, begging for pictures, of course
"take my picture!"

this was a small portion of the Immortal Tree;  hard to believe just how big they are;
this one was only 950-1000 years young
yes it is huge!

then went on to a state park for another 1/2 mile walking tour;  this one was one of thousands!
the park also had the Dyerville (no 's') Giant; 370 feet tall after it fell in a storm in 1991; 17 feet in
diameter, 52 feet in circumference ... this pic is from inside one of many that got hit by
lightening, and are wtill living, though the centers have been burned out.
inside out

then got to Eureka for the night - Friday - not that many miles, but really enjoyed
the stops in the Redwoods.

K with the old salt

Eureka to San Francisco on Saturday - what a GORGEOUS day to cross the Golden Gate!
upon entering we immediately got off 101 to get to our friends place - they
live less than a mile (crow flies) from the Bridge - but got into an airshow crowd that JUST
got out - estimated 150-200,000 people in attendance - all WALKING away from the airshow
on the same street we were going the OTHER way!  It took two-plus hours for a normal
ten minute trip - so enjoyed the Presidio for a LONNNNNNNNNG time!
Golden Gate

too our friends out to dinner at a place (seafood) they had only heard about, but never tried.  Old mom and pop place called "Pacific Cafe" - how quaint - but FANTASTIC food!  Waited for an hour to be seated; but they came and poured wine to all the soon to be clients!
K, Kim, Traci and Tom in SF

they have a lovely apartment in the area south of the Presidio and north of Golden Gate Park;
Traci is a great friend of Karina, and they are wonderful hosts.  Traci doesn't like you to
know the color of her eyes, heh, heh, heh.

Sunday left SF and kept heading south - through Big Sur country - WOW!  that's the pics you see of the CA coast where the mountains run straight to the sea, except there's a roadway about 300 feet above the ocean.  that's where we were.  slow traveling, great scenery everywhere.
Pigeon Point Lighthouse

then got to the Hearst Castle too late to get into it; but did visit the museum on the grounds - Hearst was William Randolph Hearst of newspaper and ranching fame.
Hearst Castle - San Simeon CA; drove to Santa Barbara for the night.

Monday - Santa Barbara to LA to San Diego

tunnel to Griffith Observatory in LA (one of Karina's favorite haunts from her UCLA days)

the "perfunctory" hold up Hollywood sign

 Hollywood walk of fame

 Graumann's Chinese (walk of fame restaurant)
