SUPER SUNDAY!!! "LIGHT-HEARTED"

So once again we celebrated a "Super-Sunday" event!  The purpose?  to find a way to bring our school and congregation together.  We try to do at least 3 a year.  And do so by having one service in the gym (to make worship less threatening for the school families), and to let them experience the "joy" of worship as well.  It happened to be Transfiguration Sunday (so we dealt with the rather quickly - "in his life Jesus experienced a day when his face shone like the sun ... was called Transfiguration ... BUT TODAY we want to concentrate on the aspect of LIGHT! and how important light is to our lives ... and to carry Jesus light in our hearts (re: Valentines Day) so our worship has taken the theme: Light-Hearted."  So that was our worship introduction.

The day started with a free breakfast - heart-shaped pancakes and red (strawberry) syrup; and it was a hit!

can't see the pancakes ... but they were good!

The room was set up with quite an ambiance ... there was a heart "floating" above the center of the room -

the heart was "lit" when the words, "God said, Let there be light" were read;
the Cross was lit when the John passage of John witnessing to the Light (Jesus) was read.

after the reading we did an "interactive" piece - "a string of LIGHTs" ... which consisted of the
following ... the group was asked to for a block L (then I, G, H,T) under the heart/cross and after completing the task sang a verse to Jesus in the Morning (Love, Invite, Go for, Help, and Trust). It was a little dark to see it all, but here's the Block L coming together

the Kid's had videoed a puppet play (we try to include one Super Sunday) and it was cute ... you can see it here:  Walking In The Light

During the sermon, "Light to Find our Way" I even added a personal touch with a lighted "heart/cross" that I turned on when we got to the part of "letting our light shine!"
how cool is that???

What a great day it was - had (I would guess) 235+ in attendance; and had many responses to the joy and effectiveness of getting the message out.  We did have a great time!

That was about all I could do yesterday ... now getting ready for Ash Wednesday ... does the madness ever stop?  (I hope not!)

Love from the left coast,

Karina and Dan

  1. great en'light'ening post. You are all 'aglow' with your cross. I hope you had positive directions from your school families. How wonderful to extend yourselves to these souls.

    We listened to your previous Sunday sermon on Sunday as we were home-bound in slippery/slushy/frozen states. We'll catch this week's 'light' sermon soon.

    We're looking forward to having the LP pastor & family in our midst this weekend!

  2. I always enjoy reading/hearing/seeing how your congregation is reaching out to the school families and community. What a blessing for you to "shine the light" of hope in a dark world. Thanks for sharing all the fun from your day!
