I'D BETTER CHECK IN

been a busy week.  already.  have three in the hospital - all on same floor - that's rare!  then went to visit some temporarily homebound as well.   so here it is, Wednesday, and finally getting around to blogging.  Karina is at choir - should be home soon - have exciting news for her.  while walking the dog tonight I had heard a fire truck on the sunset hiway and exiting on Cornelius Pass Road.  could hear it going down Rock Creek Blvd as well.  when the dog and I finally got to the corner where we normally turn, I realized the truck had stopped near our house - in fact next door!  I got the dog inside the house and went back to see what was happening.  there were no firemen in the truck, but I noticed the one of them came out of Chris's (our next door neighbor - the one with the smoke tree - how unique) house.  I went back to see what was happening; and was preparing myself for the worst - I'm thinking he's fallen ... but while standing outside, there goes Chris down the hall.  one of the firemen notices me and tells Chris.  he comes to the door and sheepishly says - "the element on my oven burned out.  I've gotta fix my dinner in the microwave!"  The alarm is still going on and off in his house, and he's kinda shaking his head.  he thanks me for coming over - I offered to fix him dinner (little did he know I would have given him Karina's left over half sandwich from our dinner - heh, heh), but he was readying himself for the micro.  I didn't notice it, but it must have been pretty smokey inside.  I came back home and tried to take some pics of the firetruck - but since it was about 8:30 and dark - the lights merely provided a glare.  such was the end to an otherwise normal day.

we're getting more and more excited for our travels south in October; have gotten pulpit replacements for the two Sunday's we'll be gone - both are members of PoP.  that makes it so nice.

had fun at the service Sunday - Rally Day. I always try to make a service that "outlines" the coming Sunday School year's theme.  If you've listened and haven't figured it out - I themed the worship around the "I am" passages of John.  I did two little meditations along the way.  I posted the opening welcome; the little song I wrote years ago on the "I'm" theme for the school at Roseburg.  If you need a cute little song to remember the I AM passages, feel free to use it - simple song, simple melody, simple writer. this week we go back to two services - I'll miss the single summer service.  used the following video for our  9/11 Remembrance.  I liked it for the fact that it didn't have all the crashes and burning images - just memories of 'where you were' and how you will remember.  I was in bed just waking up - it was 6 in the morning - NPR was talking about the plane hitting the tower in NYC; turned on the TV and watched in wonder.  I also remember the special service we had at noon on the first Friday 10 years ago - had neighborhood folks join us who still hadn't heard if their friends/relatives had made it out safely.  One relative had been in the last subway that had stopped under the towers, but was traveling farther, so didn't get off.  a lot of grief and pain expressed that day... so where were you?  what do you remember?

well, Karina just arrived - and was happy to hear that her sandwich is still intact.

that's it from the left coast.

we love ya.

  1. Well, yah...better check in! I figured you'd gone to visit Z man and his family, but alas, you are still in OR.

32 degrees here - last time I looked. Covered plants to preserve summer a little longer.

Will listen to your sermon now that we have been appropriately indoctrinated.

btw: When you say 'south', are you taking in AZ and CA?

Hope Mr. Smokebush/tree is doing OK. Is he lone inhabitant of that home?

    Have a great week!

I'm not ready for winter, yet - we just got summer last week!

this time we're driving the coastal hiway (US 101) all the way. Hope to be there on the 11th ... Z's party will be on the 15th so AZ may be coming to us ...

Chris (neighbor) is doing fine; he does live alone and has had some health problems this summer - that's why the concern.

  3. Got to church (POP) yesterday -- always a joy to worship there with you. Thank you for a great message. I caught up again and really appreciated the Rx for churches of last week, also. So timely for us at Grace.

By the way, what a gentle new shepherd we have at Grace -- the Holy Spirit is doing a wonderful job of healing through the words, listening skills, and actions of Pastor Berquist. May we also be blessed by being faithful, healed sheep. I know; that needs to be a continued prayer.

Yes, 32 degrees! I'm enjoying it immensely, 'cuz that means I can now harvest the carrot crop; I always wait for a good frost first -- makes them so sweet and tasty.

ANYBODY OUT THERE NEED/WANT TOMATOES????!!!! We've got them for the picking.

Homecoming this weekend, so, suppose that means more $$ to be shoveled out around here. I had forgotten that little event in the life of a teenager.

  4. so glad to hear of your new shepherd. I pray God's blessing attend him and the family of God at Grace.

this weekend is the Susan Komen "Race for the Cure". PoP doesn't have a team this year (it takes at least 10), but Karina and her mom (coming here by train this afternoon) are walking; and I still support the effort by purchasing a "Sleep In for The Cure" shirt. They find great ways to make money!

The three of us are going to "To Kill A Mockingbird" (the play) at the little theater we support on a yearly basis tonight - http://www.publichousetheatre.org/go.html
I think I've been a member for 10 years, now - we support the 'joint' effort of public playhouse and coho theater - so get to see a play a month during the 'school year'.

I could shout TOMATOES, also - we're always taking our produce to PoP on Sunday - what a privilege to be able to share.

I guess our carrots will never get sweet ... boo hoo ... no idea when we will get down to 32.

  5. Oh, don't you worry about needing the frost for sweet carrots. That might be an Iowa thing I have going here....or, that might be just a carryover from the Aurelia homeland. That's when Mom dug carrots, AND NOT UNTIL!!!!! Yours will be just fine to enjoy -- promise!
