HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!

a little mother's day humor ...

Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Iowa.
Iowa who?
Iowa a lot to you, mom!

or as I sang so many times to mom, year after year ...

M is for the many things you did for me;
O is for the other things you did for me.
T is for the thousands of things you did for me;
H is for the hundreds of things you did for me.
E is for everything you did for me;
R is for the rest of the things you did for me.
Put them all together, they spell Mother,
Mother, dear!

Happy Mother's Day - Mom!
what a joy to be with you this past week.
As she was once again able to share with us before we left,
"And if I don't see you again on this earth, I'll see you in heaven."
not too many tears ... hah!

Hope your day was special.

this weekend was special for Karina, also ... she was able to make it north
to be with her mom, Dorothy.  K got back this afternoon, and shared
the joy she had with her mom as well.  we are so blessed.  God is so good!

ooh, ooh, ooh, this just in from the family cub reporter - Karina - with this story ...

ONLY A MOTHER WOULD KNOW
- A Cup of Tea -
One day my mother was out and dad was in charge of me.  I was maybe 2 1/2.  Someone had given me a little "tea set" as a gift and it was one of my favorite toys.  Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought him a little cup of "tea", which was just water.  After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my mom came home.
My dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because "it was just the cutest thing."  Mom waited and sure enough, here I came down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy, and she watched him drink it up.  Then she said (as only a mother would know), "Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can teach to get water, is the toilet?"

had a funny thing happen to me at second service - had a Baptism and welcoming
of new members (same family, mom baptized), but after all the worship folders
were printed the family couldn't make it ... so with that on my mind, and trying to
figure out how the service would pull together ... I managed to get through
all the announcements without wishing the congregation a "Happy Mother's Day".
so, in typical DW fashion, I stopped the service (after the passing of the peace)
... said ... "can you believe it, in all the announcements I failed to wish everyone
a happy mother's day."  as usual, the congregation laughed, and just shook their heads ...

this morning we kept up with the 3rd Easter lesson - still from Easter Day -
the walk to Emmaus.  Don't know how many times I pictured the
disciples as two men (even checked Gail's new Bible Story book, and
it confirmed my lifelong understanding) but found a few commentators
that thought Cleopas' partner might have been his wife? or as I
included in one of my sermon presentations this morning (Mother's Day,
you know) maybe his mother?  the sermon is already online - had
a glitch with the recording - and while I was cleaning it up, I decided to
post it while I was working on it. my challenge go to all of you as well -
keep an eye out for Christ!  isn't the Edwin Markham poem just
wonderful?  hope the story was conveyed to our lives also.

finally got reaclimated to Oregon ... rain.  hail.  sleet. more rain. the SUN! rain.
sleet. hail. rain. rain. rain. and now sunset - no rain - for the moment.  ended up with a 48 hour
cold/flu bug - but over it now ... probably got it on the plane headin' east or headin' west ...

hope Spring arrives soon for us all.  am working making raised garden boxes this week; also have pastor's conference Tue-Thu - but it's downtown, so don't have far to travel.

have a great week, all.

love ya.

  1. Hey, hello again! Love the blog today; well, I guess I have to admit to loving it every time, so, keep 'em coming.

Loved the tea party story and am wondering if you maybe meant to say 'reach' instead of 'teach' on the punch line. Then, after thinking it over, I thought either could be appropriate. Jesus 'taught' at the well. Karina 'taught' at the toilet. Close, right? Anyway, I loved it and laughed out loud - felt good to do that.

Sorry that you were under the weather a bit, Dan; thankful that you've recuperated by now.

Happy that you got to spend some time with your Mom, Karina. That was special, right?

For as long as I can remember (some days more; some days less, I know), Mom has talked about Heaven and our presence there. What a wonderful constant in her life and in our memories of her that we share.

Hope your day is warm in the glow of His presence.

    Love, Rhoda and Larry

  2. #2 -- after all these years of wondering, FINALLY, the invitation to Jesus to "come home with us" makes sense. The LADY of the house was doing the inviting! She KNEW that the extra bed was made up. She KNEW that there was enough food in the larder, because she'd just the day before been to the mill for extra flour. (Of course, she had to do the grinding, because the guys were out fishin' again.) It's always nice to have a little 'heads-up' when there's to be company coming and if the man does the inviting, that doesn't always happen. Right, ladies?

Thank you, Brother Dan, for finally laying to rest the big question that was in my mind and giving Mrs. Cleopas her due recognition!

  3. hey Rhoda
    - good catch on the "r" vs "t" - got it corrected.

    - and thanks for "opening up the Scriptures" to me with your second post! "my heart is burning ..." how insightful!

  4. Now that the dust has settled ...on the river, we had opportunity to go to church this morning during morning coffee. :) Had to figure out what Rhoda was talking about - although I did remember the Gospel for the day. Last Sun we 'could' have sung another anthem reflecting the road to Emmaus. One line in the anthem is repeated numerous times: "and suddenly their eyes were open and they could see the Lord". Wish we could have sung it last week, but perhaps another year.
