Now I know that some of my Iowa readers have experienced a heat index of 189 in the middle of the afternoon ... but this is Oregon - and we have to take two days to do that. Oh well ... With 96 yesterday and 93 today we finally got our summer. Yes, it was the first day that we hit 90 this year! Took a toll on worship as well - pretty slim pickin's today ... either they stayed home to stay out of the heat - or all went to the beach - it got to 80 there! Anyway they stayed away in droves! whatever that means? what is a drove? other than the past-tense of drive!!! seems to me it once had to do with cattle - but that still makes it as clear as mud. will give me something to ponder for the week.
Had a techno-terrifying week with my office computer. I had recently purchased a Microsoft Office 2010 to get the full effect of a a WORKING PowerPoint process - mine was just toooo slow! Well, by adding the new software it really sapped the strength of my PC. Fortunately our IT guy happened to be at the church the other day working on some wireless stuff, and I asked him to look at my PC. He shamed me by LAUGHING at my workstation! Can you believe that? So he called our administrator and got the OK to upgrade my machine - oh, did I tell you, my computer still has a rebuilt Maytag kick-start gas engine? I thought it was fine - besides nobody else had one like it. For those in the know it began as a 256 KB RAM - upgraded to 1 GIG about a year or two ago, or three or more ... well they took it up to 2 GIG and there was no difference; so I now have a rebuilt DUAL processor with 4 (or was it 8) GIG of RAM! It's so fast, my sermons are done before I start!!! What used to take 3-4 hours should be done in nanoseconds! Or perhaps my balderdash is taking over ... no matter - it will certainly be faster than what I've ever had. Even the IT guy was surprised (and a bit impressed) with what I do from a techie fashion! And if I am looked to as the "Prince of Peace Tech-Guy" we're all in trouble!
The stump. met with the stump-grinder today - got a quote for it's removal and hope to have it done in about two weeks - he's that far out. But YES, it can be done! Hooray! So in two weeks we can continue with our landscaping project, because the drainage can be added because the stump will be subtracted! sorry, Rhoda - though I loved the turtle sculpture idea, I like the invisible turtle more.
Worship today - for those who came - brought another challenge. Again, got a lot of positive comments about the "Who do you say that I am?" theme. It's already online - had some free time before coming home today. So if you take the time to listen - I hope you pass the test! heh, heh.
and I hear our website will be upgraded really really soon! so I do hope that is a positive process for all of us! even going to have a blog on it - won't that be fun!
Karina is on her way home from Tacoma - spent the weekend with her mom. We hope that some tasks of de-stressing and de-cluttering and simplifying does the trick so that Dorothy can enjoy doing what means the most to her - helping with Lutheran Community Services - Senior Services.
don't have any pictures to add this week, so hope this memo is palatable.
have a great week, all.
Love ya.

This is a good day -- well, they all are when I remember that the Lord made them. So, I'll start again -- this is an extra-special day because first I got to read an email from my big brother (actually, from his wife; thanks, Judy) and now I got to read a blog from my little brother. Guess I'm missing my sibs today and just wish we could gather together again under one roof. Some days are like that as I get older. First, one doesn't appreciate the sibs when you actually live under one roof and then later in life, when you really need that closeness, there are too many miles between. But, God keeps our hearts close, right?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, pictures or not, thanks for warming this heart with a little shputt from Portland. Shputt -- funny word, is it not? Wonder where that came from and how the original was spelled?? It's intended as a compliment, Dan, so don't be reading anything negative into that.
I'll hear your Sunday's message this afternoon. Have to shadow Linda Smith now with Meals on Wheels, so I know where to go next week on my own. Jesup's so big, ya know.
Over and out, with love -- Rhoda and Larry (who is probably impressing some young student with an Algebraic 'whatever')
...and another thing: finally got all caught up listening to the sermons. I have to tell you, though, when it got to the shrieking woman one, I checked all the downstairs windows to make sure they were all shut -- YIKES!!! Wonder if you'd be surprised as to who you sounded like on that one -- uh, probably not. My best memory of our Dad's sermons were always the crescendo/decrescendo parts. Yours, on that sermon, won the prize on the Richter Scale, or whatever one would use, for volume and sustainability. Seriously, it was extremely moving for me and, I'm sure, for many others.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to next Sunday's message from the Holy Spirit.
By the way, I get to play for church at Grace for the first time in a number of years on the morning of September 4th. I'm looking forward to sitting there again -- hope my fingers cooperate! Also hope to be asked again sometime; I miss playing, but, I do love sitting with Larry.
hey Rhoda!
ReplyDeletethanks for the affirmative comments. the reverie of thinking of growing up together (and even then at times, yet apart) under one roof is scarey! but time and separation do work their magic to bring us back together. when people ask, "would you move back to Iowa to retire?" my second comment (the first, "retire? is there something wrong with what I'm doing?" usually catches them off guard) is "oh no, even though so many of my family are all there, I much more appreciate the opportunity to go back and visit, and renew the relationships." family is of utmost importance - but God grants us ability to live apart while abiding together. by by His grace we're always growing! isn't God good!
the RICHTER Scale???? that's earth-shaking!!! I had to go back and re-listen to that portion to hear what I had said. goodness - I'm not sure if I would have gotten through that if I were listening for the first time!
take care.
love ya.

We listened to the sermon/pop quiz last night before going to bed. Hadn't heard the phrase 'pop quiz' for over 40 years...so you'd think the phrase would not ignite fear...but it did. Reminded me of those DREADED Western Civ pop quizzes. Oh, I hated them w/ a passion. Anyhooo...once again you passed the preaching/sermonizing bar exam. We've come to expect it every time we listen in to POP/Sermons.
ReplyDeleteNoah was asked to preach the installation sermon for his supervising vicarage pastor (from New York Mills). He is now in Anoka, MN (Twin Cities). That was the real reason we were asked to stay w/ the girls...so Noah and Amanda could steal away for an overnight. While I am still waiting to hear what he preached on, his wife reported to us that he had a great sermon, did a great job on delivery and had nice comments afterward. We were delighted for him. Maybe he will share with us - some day - (hint hint Noah if you are reading!)
So, the stump is living on borrowed time. Glad to hear that encouraging news.
Didn't know you were working w/ less than speedy internet/RAM at work. We become so fickle at times waiting for 'the technology' to go faster. You have apparently been extremely patient w/ your lack of RAM and chip speed. And how wonderful that you will blog! You are now a experienced and critiqued blogger of 13 months! Will your blogs be sermon reflections too? Or will it be a reflection on POP life? or ?
