YESTERDAY, ALL MY TROUBLES SEEMED SO FAR AWAY ...

what a day.

rose at 3:30 a.m.  showered.  had granola.  stumbled in  the dark to find the car.  made it to the airport by 5:15 to catch the plane to Oahu at 6:15.  still can't get over the airport with no walls!

the gate "waiting area" at 5:30 a.m.

de plane, de plane from the waiting area at dark o'clock!
flew Hawaiian Airlines InterIsland commuter - still have to go through security.

Arrived in Honolulu in 35 minutes - rented a car (black Jeep - why black vehicles in Hawaii, I'll never know) then listening to Miss Garmin take us on the scenic tour of the city, because we couldn't turn where she said.  we heard mostly "recalculating..." for the first 15 minutes!  Hah!  But it was fun.

Got to the Pearl Harbor (USS Arizona Memorial) area about 8:30, got our boat tickets to see the memorial (the ship is the cemetery) and were given a 9:00 am trip.  The tour begins with a sobering movie of what wasw happening in the world pre-1941; then continues with the films of the bombing of P.H. on the morning of 12/7/41.  Of course there's FDR's "Yesterday, December 7th, 1941, a day that will live in infamy."  One of those goosebump to tears moments.  Was suprised - not a lot of 85+ year-old seniors to be seen, but was also impressed with the younger people there - it will hopefully be a caution to war to the next generation.  Then onto the boat - ?maybe a 100 at a time? to the memorial.

then onto the memorial -  a quiet sobering place to be sure;  some walk about rather stunned;  some in tears; some keep talking with no clue...

inside, a monument of many emotions ...

the gun turret

the memorial wall/pondering room

and the oil still oozes (they say about a quart a day)- Karina said the legend is
"it's the sailors' tears."

then toured the submarine "Bowfin" (last night's picture of us was on it);
then toured the USS Missouri - will add pictures later - where on September 2, 1945
the war was officially and ceremonially over with Japan's surrender.

Got back home around 7:00, had dinner at "our" Mexican restaurant;
drove through a rainstorm; slept well; and did  this quick blog -
today off to Volcano National Park.

til later,

Karina and Dan

  1. Am interested in hearing more of the Pearl Harbor visit. A pivotal moment in history. Wow, that was an early morning rise your you guys. Have your bodies adjusted to island time?

  2. Re Mark and Judy's question concerning your adjustment to island time -- don't know if that's happened, but, from all accounts, your bodies seem to have adjusted the the various foods put before you. So far, I've noted that EATING seems to be the highpoint of the day, Dan. Good thing you've got 'Marionberry' woman with you to keep that under control.

    Actually, just keep sending those pictures of the food and include your wonderful mouth-watering descriptions -- makes for a great diet back here in Jesup. Kind of messy though, 'cuz the drool keeps making a puddle in my lap!

    Love you both -- R and L

  3. Hi Dan & Karina

    All is well at the Luana. Nothing as exciting as laceration by banyan.

    Enjoying your posts. Maybe next time we're in Portland we'll see if we can get a pass to get into one of your sermons. I imagine there will be a lot more gospel than law!

    Dinner at Mi's last night was terrific. Drove by the Hilton today and had a nice time at Hapuna beach. Left over lasagna tonight.

    To Berkeley Tues, home Wed.
